Graduation

Waylon is spending 19 weeks in counterintelligence training in Arizona near Sierra Vista (I have links to the area in the Graduation page).  He will finish roughly mid-September, and will then be assigned to his first tour of duty.  He won't know where he will be assigned until the end of August.  The first four weeks carried restrictions similar to basic training (limited phone calls, no off-base privileges, etc.).  Once that period ended, Waylon was allowed to have a cell phone, his music CD's, and "goody" packages.  I was able to send him rice krispie treats and peanut M&M's in his package.  The only restriction in sending him food items is that they need to be in a zip lock bag or a plastic container, since they cannot have open food in their room.  If you are planning to send him something, also please note the new address format.  He was reprimanded for having my package addressed as PFC Waylon Bader, instead of PFC Bader, Waylon.  I'll reserve my comments about that.

He shares his dorm room with 2 other guys.  The room is not very big.  He said the food is worse than at Fort Leonard Wood.  Because of the elevation, it doesn't get quite as hot as Tucson or Phoenix.  It typically rains in the afternoon for a brief period, and then the temperature cools down.  Lightening and thunder usually accompany the rain.

Waylon's cell phone number is (650) 678-5768.  The times to reach him are in the evenings between 7 and 9 pm, Saturdays after 6:30 pm, and all day on Sunday.  Right now, Ft. Huachuca is on Pacific Daylight Time, the same as California.  Weekends are the best time to call.

His daily schedule is as follows:

Monday - Friday

  • 4:30 am wake-up call
  • 5:15 am, alternate between running and push ups/sit ups
  • 6:15 am, shower and get dressed in camouflage uniform (BDU)
  • 7:15 am, breakfast (chow)
  • 8:05 am, formation and march to class
  • 8:30 am, class begins (with a few breaks)
  • noon, lunch (more chow)
  • 12:45 pm, class begins again
  • 5:15 pm, dinner (and more chow)
  • 6:00 pm, formation to get instructions and mail
  • then free until 9 pm which is bed-time, but must have boots polished, room cleaned, and homework completed or else it's a late night

Saturday

  • Either drills (similar to basic training) or special classes (such as cultural awareness of Iraq).  Classes may go the entire day (until 5 pm), or they may be shorter.
  • Evenings, goof-off time

Sunday

  • Free day to do laundry, clean, homework, and goof-off.

We are planning to visit him over the 4th of July weekend.  He is able to get passes to be off base.  If you are planning to visit him, give him a call to get his schedule.  Note that he was having difficulty establishing his voice mail on his cell phone.  If you get a female voice asking you to leave a message, Waylon will not get it.  You should call back at another time.  If you hear Waylon's voice on the message, he will be able to retrieve it.

I will periodically update this site with photos and other news, so continue to check it.  Thanks for all of your support to Waylon.

P.S. AIT is Advanced Individual Training.
